This is slightly OT, but I thought those of you who love The IT Crowd as much as I do might get a kick out of it: they want people in the IT industry to help dress their set! They are just about to start filming series three (YES!!) and want the office to look like a "a geek's Shangri-La". Here is a link to Graham Linehan's blog (the writer, who also wrote Black Books and Father Ted) with full details: http://whythatsdelightful.wordpress.com/2008/08/12/be-my-hive-brain/

So what would you suggest they have in the office? I think a Guy Fawkes mask and Rick Astley poster are essential myself...

(and if you don't know what The IT Crowd is, have a look here)

Seconded. In particular, USB missiles (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/warfare/8bc4/) and Bawls are absolute essentials.

I'd be tempted to say that anyone with free deskspace is a slacker of an IT geek. :p

What do you think it is that my boss and the ginger werewolf keep firing at me? Those.

I'm sure I mentioned that they were toy missiles. What did you think they were shooting me with?

I am concerned about what you think my colleagues do...

Nope, USB missiles. I should get some so I can retaliate properly.

To be honest, though, it's really going to depend on the personalities of the characters. A desk or other work area is generally going to reflect the person who uses it all the time. If there are shared areas, they will be affected not according to who uses them and how often, but also the culture of the organisation itself. A garage startup is going to have a lot more personalisation than a megacorp with strict cleanliness and ornamentation policies. And then there's the issue of how much money is floating around for such things, whether any of them are paid for by work, etc.

If I were them, I'd be trawling the internet for "geek[y]"+"on my desk/cubicle wall", or even "i'm a $jobtitle"+"on my desk/wall".

Even so, there's not a standard one-size-fits-all assortment of geek junk.

Looking at my computer area at home: a stack of wires (usb, firewire, etc.), a stack of small tools, a stack of external drive cases (none matching, only one actually live) drives, mounting pieces, etc., And a Diesel Sweeties comic with Red Robot on the cover.

I think you definitely need a Red Robot (http://www.explodingdog.com/redrobot.html) in there somewhere. If made out of legos, even better.

Some reference to C'thulu or flying spaghetti monster wouldn't hurt either.

Actually, they've asked the creator of DS for some stuff already. He happily sent them an assortment.

Propeller beanie?

Small diecast of a B-17 Stratofortress?

MUST: One or two lolcats printed and taped to cabinets. Only the most ironic self-referential ones of course.

Copies of the more technical XKCD comics printed out, a well-thumbed printout of the Jargon File (bonus points if it is on greenbar), and a 'scope (what techie does not have one? seriously). Homebrew robots/lighting-temperature control/widgets are good, too.

That is all I can think of off the top of my head, but I am sure there will be more.

A randomly placed cat bowl with LOL written on it, nerf guns, a penguin of death, a whole wall of dilbert cartoons (possibly annotated), a BOFH excuses calendar, a mobile made from dismantled hard drive platters, miniature RC control cars, the coffee machine to end ALL coffee machines and a wallchart to track the progress of the worst users.

Oh, amd at least one troublesome but kind of interesting box that lies disembowelled on the desk because nobody can bring themselves to throw it away or admit they can't fix it.
